A fair few of the names in my Estraguil setting have literal meanings. Guile tends to mean cunning – in a slightly pejorative way, but it also gives us ‘beguiling’ which he certainly is.

How does he look?

Guile has bright red hair, high cheekbones, an expressive mouth and large eyes. He’s lean and good looking, with a touch of innocence about him.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

He has a forked tongue.

Who does he love? Why?

Guile loves his friends, and is drawn to the enigmatic Jehanne. He finds her mysterious, compelling, and beautiful.

Does this person love him?

Jehanne loves Guile’s musical trio.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

Guile left his family to train as a musician. He went to Tirol as an apprentice when very young, and considers the trio to be his family.

Where is he from?

Guile is Strafian, a kith group that lives in the hills, farming and trading. They have a strong tradition of musicians and story tellers.

Does his hometown affect his behaviour, thoughts and attitude?

Being a Strafian, Guile prizes musicianship very highly indeed.

What does he want out of life?

Guile has no grand plans. He’s doing what he loves most and moves from one day to the next, taking it as it comes and making the best of it.

A Meeting With the Abbot Rutilius

My Lord, Cardinal Benedetto Gaetano, from your servant, Captain Luigi Barozzi.

I hope this letter finds you in good health, my Lord, I pray too that God guides your hand protects you from the envy of others. I wish to commend to you, my Lord, a cleric whom I met by chance as I returned from my pigrimage to the Shrine of the Black Madonna. God has not, so far, been pleased to cure my sickness, the wound continues to afflict my health and I write this epistle to be sent on by courier since I must ride slowly.

I met the Abbot Rutilius and his acolyte on the road at Narbonne. Like me, they were spending a night at an inn there; they on their way to the shrine of the Virgin at Montserrat, I on my way back.

I thought it worthy of writing to you, my Lord Cardinal, to tell you of these two. They solve crimes that baffle others, misdeeds and felonies are as clear to them as spring water.

The Abbot Rutilius had just finished his evening repast when I came into the common room. It was busy and at his invitation, I sat and shared his table. He recommended a local wine and he joined me in a glass as we spoke. The Abbot has an imposing stature, somewhat above average height and far more than average corpulence. His complexion is a marvellous collection of colours with reds and mauves predominating.

“And where do you go?’ he asked me. ‘There are but two ways from here, one south, one north.’

‘I go north, m’Lord Abbot. I go home.’

‘I might guess you’ve been to one of the shrines, then,’ he suggested. ‘Montserrat perhaps, perhaps even to Compastela?’

‘Montserrat…’

He nodded. ‘I noticed you favour your left leg and that your complexion is pale. You’ve been to pray to La Moreneta?’

I smiled, nodded. ‘An old wound that gives me pain. And you?’

‘Montserrat. I have work to do there.’

‘Work? I thought it might be a pilgrimage?’

‘I oversee the tithes and the taxes to his Holiness. I make certain St. Peter’s Pence is gathered in.’

‘Ah.’ This surprised me. ‘A counter of monies.’

The Abbot chuckled. His stomach, which I may have mentioned was not inconsiderable, shook with good humour. ‘My visits are not always popular but generally, I see things that others miss and put them right, it eases the pain of taxes.’

I must have frowned in puzzlement here for he explained.

‘There may be schemes afoot, schemes that defraud the abbey. I notice and put a stop to it so, although Papa Martinus gets his share, the establishment is often better off than before.’

‘A fraud investigator too?’

He finished his glass of wine and I poured more.

‘Not just frauds, either.’ He winked, lowered his voice and leaned across the table conspiratorially. ‘There have been murders too.’

‘My Lord…’

‘Rutilius, please.’

‘Rutilius. You find murders? In monasteries?’

‘Holy places have their share too.’

‘Incredible. Tell me, how did you come to be a counter of money and an investigator of crime?’

‘Mistakes and happenstance.’

‘Now you must tell me more. Landlord,’ I spoke loudly and held up an empty jug which was quickly replaced. ‘Mistakes, you said.’

Again he chuckled. ‘May I – if you’ve finished?’ I nodded and he helped himself to a chop at the side of my plate. ‘Meat. This past year I have come all the way from Avignon through the villages of southern France; meat is not to be had by the country folk, it’s a rarity. Once, in Carcassonne I was given a decent meal and now, here.’

‘This inn,’ I waved my knife around, ‘this place caters to a wealthier class than most; meat may be had, at a price. You mentioned mistakes.’

‘I did, I did. I’m not used to wealth, Sir. My father was a fisherman in Naples till he disappeared – maybe he fell overboard or maybe he just ran away from us, a large family. I was soon found work, at the Bishop’s palace; I discovered a library of books and scrolls there, something I had never imagined ‘till then. My employer forthwith set about teaching me to read,’ Rutilius the Abbot smiled sadly, remembering his younger days I suppose. ‘To make the story short, the Bishop saw me educated and I went to Pisa where I was introduced to mathematics.’

‘A mistake,’ I said, trying to bring the Abbot back to the point.

‘Ah yes, the mistake. I came to Avignon where my task master mistook mathematics for arithmetic. Thus, I was put in the counting house.’

‘I see, I think. And happenstance?’

‘Happenstance, because I notice things that don’t add up. Bills don’t tally to what they’re supposed to, goods are wrongly valued. In a case earlier this year, the scriveners were idle; there was no paper, no vellum. The money had been spent on opulent decoration.’

I nodded, understanding. ‘Murder, I remember you mentioning.’

‘I give you but one example. A monk had stolen from abbey funds; he killed another and assumed his identity merely by shaving his beard and claiming to be the dead man.’

‘So much sin in such holy houses.’

Rutilius shrugged. ‘I must give credit to my assistant. A young man whose mind is sharp enough to see things I miss. We discuss these inconsistencies, we notice and we draw conclusions.’

‘Not with you tonight?’

‘Ah, he’ll be about. Probably making sure our donkey is fed. A beautiful boy, eyes like black olives, fingers like a musician’s. For one so young, he is an accomplished swordsman and has saved my valuables as well as my life on occasion.’

I had seen such a boy, by the kitchen door, talking with a maid. ‘You’re sure it’s the donkey, then? Not the serving maids?’ I joked.

‘William? The farthest thing from his mind.’

The jest passed Rutilius by like the Levite in the parable of the Good Samaritan. I held my piece and, grinning, poured more wine.

Rutilius was obviously not used to such strong drink and told me tales of detection that had my eyebrows raised until he went to his bed. I met the boy too; we discussed the finer points of the French sword and how the English, lacking finesse, merely hack at their opponents.

The Abbot imagines that William, the youngster, will eventually enter holy orders but this, I fear, may be one of his rare mistakes. However, believe me, my Lord Cardinal; either or both would make a useful addition to your staff.

Look for them at Avignon, have them come to see you.

Bartlett's Rule by Chelle Cordero

Okay – it’s time to tell us about that hunky hero in your book.

What's his name?

Lon Bartlett

Why did you pick that name?

I always look up names (usually under baby names) for their meanings. In this case “Lon” means “ready to do battle”; the name Lon also reminds me of a Lion (without the “I” of course!). The Bartlett surname appears many times throughout history (politicians, publishers, racecar drivers, sports figures, philosophers and writers) and is also used for a collection of quotations. Besides, the title Bartlett’s Rule just seems to roll off of the tongue comfortably.

Give us a brief description of how he looks.

I picture Lon as a big (maybe about 6 foot to 6’2”) man and yet graceful. More to do with image and less to do with vanity, I picture him working out and keeping trim and fit. Because of his public image, he probably has his hair professionally styled and his clothing personally tailored. All in all, he is very comfortable “in his own skin”.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

He definitely is the type of man who would attract stares from most women.

Who does he love? Why?

His romantic love interest is Paige Andrews. In the beginning he believes his love for Paige stems more from a need to protect her but then he comes to realize that he admires her strength and appreciates how she makes him feel. He also has a very deep and friendly love for his publicist, Shell, who once was a romantic liaison and now is simply his best friend.

Does this person love him?

Yes, Paige loves him even though her love and need for him scares her.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

While his family is only mentioned in the story, it is obvious that his closeness with his parents and the way he was raised is a big reason for the self-confidence he has.

Where is he from?

Lon has settled in the very urban and bustling New York City.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?

Lon is very “metropolitan” and used to the hectic pace. He is also used to fine restaurants, doormen, and public scrutiny.

What does he want out of life?

He wants Paige in his life. Lon also wants something more than the shallow relationships that have helped to promote his image.

What's his biggest secret? (Only share if it isn't a spoiler in the story.)

All I can say is that Lon learns he has no regrets for his actions if it means protecting the ones he loves.

Did you write more than one story about him?

So far Bartlett’s Rule is the only story with Lon Bartlett. Who knows though? That could change.

How would he describe you?

Lon respects me for being a strong-willed woman who is not afraid to voice my opinions.

Lon truly adores women. Of course he enjoys sex but he also is thrilled when he can engage in intelligent conversation with a woman.

Meet the Hero from His Shadowed Heart with Hazel Statham

What's his name?

Richard Moreton, Earl of Waverly

Why did you pick that name?

He is a strong character and I wanted a strong name.

Give us a brief description of how he looks.

He has a tall, imposing frame. His eyes that had once been described as fine but now hold a coldness in their depths are storm grey. He has a well-formed mouth, a dark complexion and dark hair. He has the natural bearing of an aristocrat.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

He is a striking man and one that would stand out in a crowd.

Who does he love? Why?

His second wife, Caroline. Initially, he is drawn to her gentleness and calm, believing she would make a good mother for his daughter, Julia. However, he is not prepared for the healing influence she has on his life and finds it difficult to come to terms with his growing love.

Does this person love him?

From the very beginning, Caroline loves her husband and willingly accepts his offer of marriage, even though she knows it will be a marriage in name only.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

He centers his whole life around his daughter, Julia. He seemingly tolerates his sister, Lady Victoria, but he has a sibling fondness for her.

Where is he from?

London

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?

He is a man of his time and conforms to the mores of the day.

What does he want out of life?

Peace of mind and heart!

No. This is his only appearance in one of my books.

How would he describe you?

As an older woman that hopefully, he would find tolerable.

Okay -- its time to tell us about that hunky hero in your book.

What's his name? Special Agent Michael “Hawk” Arrons

Why did you pick that name? My hero’s mother is Native American and I wanted a name that would reflect that. It needed to be strong and masculine.

Give us a brief description of how he looks. Emotions rarely reflect on Hawk’s face, but you get the impression that he’s someone you never want to anger. His features are strong, his eyes are mysterious, and his nose has been broken more than once. You wouldn’t even call him handsome until he smiles, but he reeks of leashed power and masculinity. The sound of his voice reminds you of warm maple syrup, and you want to be his pancake. Although his hands are huge, his touch is gentle.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance? Although he’s a big man, he moves with speed and seems ready to pounce. At first glance the words duty and honor pop into your mind.

Who does he love? Why? Before he met Rachel, Hawk loved God, family, and country. If they were threatened, he’d fight to the death to protect them. At the age of 10 he wanted to be an FBI agent. There was something about Rachel that tugged the strings in his heart. When they first meet, Hawk nearly arrests her for filing a false complaint.

Does this person love him? Rachel knew that he was her soul mate before Hawk had a clue.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him? Naomi, his mother, is very proud of their native heritage. His father is retired Navy and doesn’t know how to say a word without it sounding like a command. All his life, Hawk tried to please his father by excelling in whatever he did. It was never enough.

Where is he from? Hawk never had a home town because he was a Navy brat. Summers were spent on the Sioux reservation. When he was a teenager, his father retired and bought a ranch near Sarasota , Florida . It was the first time his parents noticed the empathy he has with animals.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude? The summers he spent with his uncle, a Shaman, opened his mind to things not easily explained. The rigid discipline of his father and the gentle love of his mother gave Hawk a strong respect for women.

What does he want out of life? Family, love, honor and respect.

What's his biggest secret? (Only share if it isn't a spoiler in the story.) If he had to, Hawk could kill someone 13 different ways without a weapon.

Did you write more than one story about him? Not yet, but I would like to make Hawk as famous as Alex Cross, or Stephanie Plum. More stories about him are jumping around in my mind.

How would he describe you? After looking me over with piercing eyes, I think he would describe me as a pleasant woman in her 60’s with sharp eyes and a sense of humor. (I hope!)

Is there anything else about your hero that we need to know? Feel free to share. The few friends Hawk has are loyal for life. Without knowing it, Hawk makes every woman’s pulse race and breath quicken. All he has to do is smile.

Why did you pick that name?

Because he is an South African werelion. :D

Give us a brief description of how he looks.

In human form, he has long, thick raven black hair, aristocratic, very feline face with high cheekbones and square jaw, and golden brown eyes. He also had a sensual mouth and a nose that almost seemed cat-like as the nostrils flared, wehn taking in his heroine's scent. He has a corded neck, a pair of massive shoulders, a chest with chiseled pecs, showing a man who surely exercised with weights to be that buffed. What's his name?

His name is Duke Amoro Dragone of Genoa.

Why did you pick that name?

The name Amoro is my own creation. It sounds Italian but has never existed before. Amoro’s surname is Dragone and that is an actual Italian name. I liked the Dragone name because it signifies dragon and I could create a crest of a fire breathing dragon.

Give us a brief description of how he looks.

Amoro is tall, muscular, with vibrant green eyes and black hair with curls. He is very serious and focused.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

His eyes are an unusually vibrant color of green.

Who does he love? Why?

At first, Amoro belives he loves Laria Malacresta, but he knows he can never marry her because of her low nobility status. He soon falls in love with Morena, which at first is unrequited.

Does this person love him?

Not at first. She struggles with her feelings for him because of the forceful way with which he gained an audience with her to propose marriage.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

Amoro loves his mother Caterina and his father, Bartolomeo. When his father is murdered, Amoro’s love is so strong that he swears vengeance and will sacrifice his own happiness to honor his father’s dying wish for him to marry Morena.

Where is he from?

Amoro was born and bred in Genoa. From an early age, he has been groomed to become Duke after his father.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?

Amoro understands duty and has the skills and qualities to make a good Duke and leader.

What does he want out of life?

Amoro wants to avenge his father’s death and honor his father’s dying wish and marry Contessa Morena.

What's his biggest secret?

Amoro has kept Laria Malacresta as his mistress for several years. But when he realizes he must marry Morena, he parts ways with Laria to honor his future marriage vows.

Did you write more than one story about him?

No, Amoro will have to live in the hearts and memories of the readers. This is the only story I plan for him. Besides, he is living happily ever after, so there is no need for a sequel.

How would he describe you?

Amoro would describe me as a very dedicated writer with a penchant for the odd and unusual to be included in her stories. He also knows that I my heart is full of passion and my mind is always creating and twisting new stories and plots.

Tell us about the hero in your book. Okay -- its time to tell us about that hunky hero in your book. What's his name?

Sinbad sh'en Singh

Why did you pick that name?

I'm a fan of the movie the Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and I thought it would be great to write a futuristic Adventures of Sinbad so the first name was obvious. For his surname, I wanted something Far Eastern, slightly Indian-sounding.

Give us a brief description of how he looks.

Sinbad is a Terro-Felidan hybrid. His mother was from the planet of Felida, which was at war with Earth at the time of his birth; his father was a prisoner of war who fell in love with his captor's daughter. The Felidans evolved from felines so Sinbad has the look of a cat about him, especially in the way he moves. Although his appearance is almost human, he has green eyes with elliptical pupils, fangs and claws he can spring when needed, and a mane of wild copper hair. He's 6'8" and when he's totally happy--he purrs!

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

Other than that he's half-cat? No....

Who does he love? Why?

Being a smuggler, as well as because of his tragic family background, Sinbad displays a Love 'em-Leave 'em attitude, but when he meets Andrea Talltrees, he falls hook, line, and sinker for her. Since she's a Terran and he hates Terrans with a passion, he hides it by being as rude to her as he can. Because she's married and he's sworn he'll never poach another man's property, he sees his feelings as a lost cause from the beginning. Eventually, he tells Andi that he'll never love a woman he can bully and since she's the most headstrong, feisty female he's ever met, he should've known right then what the outcome was going to be! In the fourth book, Sinbad's Pride, he finally confesses to Andi how he felt the first time he saw her: "I'd have crawled across Terra on my hands and knees, if you'd just agreed to let me kiss the inside of one of your thighs! I wanted you so badly I wanted to smash things!"

Does this person love him?

The answer is an unequivocal "yes"! Andi is a very sheltered person, member of a cult which refuses to use modern conveniences and follows the lifestyle of an earlier century. She loves Sinbad but because when she first meets him, she's married, so she ignores the way she feels. His rudeness and their culture-clashes help, but the adventures they go through end up bringing them closer together. When she at last admits she loves him, she berates herself for committing what she considered the ultimate sin, then forces herself to ignore her upbringing and become lost in the passion she feels for him. Her response when he asks her why she loves him? "God knows, Sin--because I sure don't!"

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

In spite of what he says to others, secretly, all Sin wants is to have a den and a family of his own. His parents, and all of his relatives (both human and Felidan) with the exception of his grandfather and one cousin, were killed in the Terro-Felidan War or because of it. The one female he thought would become his mate left him because he was too young to settle down, and he's had two love affairs which ended with the women having abortions. Because of this, when he thinks Andi's pregnant, he's almost frantic to keep her from doing the same, begging her to let him take the baby to raise to make up for the waste of his own life. When they flee Earth and have to leave Andi's son behind, he worries about the boy until he learns that Andi's parents will care for him. His relationship to Andi's son Cash is important in the other books, also.

Where is he from?

He was born on Felida, a planet in the Emaurant Galaxy, but when he was three, his father was arrested as a traitor and sentenced to Ft. Joy in the Toxic Zone on Earth, where he died. Used as "evidence" at his father's trial, Sinbad was sent with him, and stayed in the prison until he was fourteen when the prison nurse helped him escape.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?

The home units on Felida are patterned after lion's Prides with a single leader and his wife and concubines, and other clans and dens under him. Felida is a warrior-planet because a male has to be strong to protect his mates and his cubs, and while young males are encouraged to "sow their wild oats," once they're mated, they become faithful husbands and good fathers. The gold earring each one wears in his left earlobe converts into a wedding ring--a mate's ring--so it'll be handy when they find the right female. A Pride Leader is allowed two concubines but Sin states that when he takes a wife, she'll be the only female in his den and he'll have no others. In order to protect Andi when they go into dangerous places, Sin asks her to wear his ring so she'll be thought his mate and be safe.

What does he want out of life?

Until he meets Andi, he thinks he just wants to be the best smuggler in the Galaxy. At that time, he's already wanted by the Federation with a price on his head. He admits that some day he may return to Felida because his grandfather wants him to take over leadership of the Pride but at twenty-nine, he feels he's still too young to settle down to that responsibility. His life is fairly aimless until Andi barges into his life and sets him on a collision course with the Love of his life.

What's his biggest secret? (Only share if it isn't a spoiler in the story.)

Sin's biggest secret is one even he doesn't know he has. He learns about it in a very dramatic way and it changes the way he looks at Andi and his entire life. To tell would definitely give away the end of the story.

Did you write more than one story about him?

So far, there are four novels about Sinbad, tracing him from that first dramatic meeting with Andi on Earth, to his life on Felida when he returns to take over the sh'en Singh Pride, and through another interplanetary war involving Terra. He goes from being a brash young smuggler to a patriarch of his clan with no evidence of slowing down or retiring, loving Andi every step of the way.

How would he describe you?

He say, "Pardon me--don't I know you? You look like my Andi, but you can't be. You've got that same "chip on the shoulder" attitude. Are you a relative?"

When I created Sinbad, I tried to make the "perfect" man. He's exotic, handsome, has a wicked sense of humor, is sensitive, brave, ruthless when he needs to be, has a strong idea of family and honor, and--in spite of being a smuggler--is honest in his dealings with others. He'll do anything he can for those he loves, and what he later becomes in life is mainly due to his wanting to provide for Andi and the children they may someday have. If he were a real person, I'd grab him for myself before Andi could get him!

Why did you pick that name?

Travis seemed to be a virile sexy name for a man. I chose Anderson because it has a Swedish origin, which emulates his looks.

Give us a brief description of how he looks.

Powerful, well muscled, handsome athletic build. Intriguing rugged face, presenting with deep set, piercing blue eyes, a fine straight nose, and a wickedly charming smile. He has a tall, confident stride. His manner is always self assured and confident. He exudes a virile appeal!! Whew!!

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

His unruly sandy colored hair!

Who does he love? Why?

He loves Head Nurse, Nicole Danley. They start out with a special camaraderie, working side by side in life and death hospital scenarios. This turns into a deep all consuming love. Her deep concern and compassion for her patients emulates his feelings. Then there is the electric sparks and chemistry flying between them with any sort of intimate contact!!

Does this person love him?

Nicole tries hard to fight back her desires for Travis, but he overrides this as he becomes the hero many times over in different scenarios. She loves his sincerity and compassion for his patients and knows deep down that everything will be okay whenever he is around.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

His father had been a famous orthopedic surgeon. He had invested wisely making the scope of his wealth grow. Then tragedy struck when his parents died in a plane crash returning from a medical conference in Paris. Travis’s older sister, Liz, took over and raised him. She married Wade, a lawyer with political ambitions which turns into underhanded schemes and plots to transport him to the Presidency. This situation among others lends the many twists and turns to this pulse quickening love story.

Where is he from?

He is from Ada, Michigan. It is a wealthy community. He resides in a magnificent mansion overlooking the rippling Thornapple River.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?

Although he was born and raised in a world of wealth and prestige, he also was taught to care for others. Being around his father who was a doctor, embedded this caring attitude into his very soul, thus making him want to become a doctor also.

What does he want out of life?

He wants to make his father proud by being the best doctor. He tuly desires a family of his own, since his family life was so wonderful when his parents were alive. He desires a wife that he can love and share his life with, as his mother and father did. They were excellent role models for him!

He would describe me to be a lot like the heroine in my book, Nicole. OF course I patterned a lot of her personality and actions after my own as I worked as an RN in the hospital. You could say that a lot of scenarios and people in the book came from the real life experiences I had!!

What's his name? Why did you pick that name?

Jonathan Adam Blakely was a joint name picked by his father and mother, a tribute to his grandfather Jonathan Blakely and his father’s brother, Adam. It was a good name choice because it enables Adam to use his middle name when he goes undercover.

Give us a brief description of how he looks. Is
there anything unusual about his appearance?

Adam has a medium build with good muscle tone. Adam has just gotten his PhD from Cornell in Veterinarian Science. He rides a lot so he’s tan He has dark hair and dark eyes which Maggie calls brooding eyes. His eyes are wary, and he doesn’t seem to miss a thing. A good judge of character. Maybe. I describe him this way, because he’s a bit of a chameleon throughout the story.

Who does he love? Why?

He was married to someone he thought he loved, but found out she didn’t love him. They divorced a year before the story took place. He falls in love with Maggie because of her feistiness, her passion for horses and her sensuality. It doesn’t hurt that she has red hair and eyes the color of the Caribbean. He just likes her and feels like a heel when he has to be deceptive toward her.

Does this person love him?

Maggie doesn’t trust him. She starts having feelings toward him and those feelings go back and forth. She’s attracted but ambivalent.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to
him?

Adam’s mother died when he was a child. He adored his father and wants to follow in his father’s footsteps to run Blakely Stables in Kentucky. When his father is framed for the murder of a racehorse and the horse’s trainer and he dies from a fatal heart attack, Adam is devastated. As law enforcement close the case, Adam goes undercover and find the person who murdered the horse, the trainer and indirectly, his father.

Where is he from? Does his hometown affect his
behavior, thoughts and attitude?

Adam grew up on a horse farm in Kentucky.

No. Although Adam loves his farm, it’s his family that affects his behavior, thoughts and attitudes.

What does he want out of life?

Adam wants to continue his father’s legacy and run a successful thoroughbred breeding operation and racing stable.

Adam goes to the McGregor Farm undercover as Adam Grant, playboy entrepreneur, novice horse owner. He’s not a great actor and his deception gets him into trouble.

No. I haven’t thought about a series with Adam and Maggie.

I think he and Maggie would describe me as the true villain, because I get them into so much trouble. .

What's his name? Why did you pick that name?

His name is Josh Cassidy. I wanted an absolutely ordinary name, for an absolutely ordinary, unmemorable person. And if he heard you refer to him as hunky, he would be leaving by the nearest fire exit before you had finished reading this page….

Give us a brief description of how he looks.

About six feet tall, he’s actually very well-muscled but wears slightly oversized clothing to hide his physique. He’s blonde, slightly thin-lipped, and absolutely nondescript.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

He’s notable only for a slightly over-sized nose that’s been broken. Otherwise if you saw him in a crowd, you’d never notice him. That’s the way he likes it…

Who does he love? Why?

No one: He split up with the fiery Caitlin just before the novel started because he interrupted a holiday to return to work. She didn’t realize that the phone call came from the (British) Prime Minister’s Personal Secretary. One doesn’t turn down a summons from the PM – but he couldn’t tell her it was the PM.

Does this person love him?

Yes, but it’s irrelevant – at least until the end of the book, and if I told you any more it would be a spoiler, so I can’t. J

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

He has no family; mother was a junkie (she never knew who his father was – it could have been any one of several young men) who by some miracle managed to stay clean most of the time that she was carrying him. He lived with a succession of foster-parents until his teens. The one person who he came to care for as a mother died just as he was about to go to University.

Where is he from?

He was born in a squat in North London . Mother died from an overdose soon after giving him up for adoption.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?

Probably. He’s deeply, deeply cynical, yet serves his country. When I read Stella Rimington’s autobiography (she’s the former head of the British secret service) I read how she considered people who believed in their country to be the ideal employee. Yet it seems to me that working for MI5 must inevitably embitter one, because of what one sees, and what one has to do in the name of patriotism.

What does he want out of life?

That’s a good question, and it’s something he wouldn’t tell me. He’s joked a few times ‘to survive long enough to collect a pension.’ I think he was joking, but I’m not sure.

What's his biggest secret?

I can only talk generally because to tell more would be to give spoilers, but to be honest, Cassidy’s biggest problem is Cassidy. He’s got so used to disbelieving everything and everyone that he doesn’t even believe in himself any more, and it almost derails him at one point.

How would he describe you?

Probably as someone who chatters a little too freely, and should keep his nose out of what doesn’t concern him.

He’s very intelligent, and his worst weakness is that at times he’s probably more of a thinker than a doer, and has seen too much for a man in his late-thirties. He served in the last days of the Northern Ireland conflict with the IRA and in various other operations, most of which are governed by the Official Secrets Act. He realizes that in order not to have a breakdown -as many in his profession do through living a false life- he needs a confidante to keep his sanity. But he always seems to pick someone who won’t be around too long, and won’t be talking too much beyond the immediate future. He is a very dangerous man to know…

Paul Bowen is the main character in The Picker. The

name sounded strong, one you could remember,

a good name for a man who wants to be a star.

there anything unusual about his appearance?
Paul is not a tall man, but he has heavily muscled

hands and arms from playing music since his

childhood. He has green eyes, red hair and is very

attractive to the female sex, he has a lot of

charisma or magnetism.

Who does he love? Why?
Paul has a passion for his music not people. He is a grass-roots

player of country music, unschooled, but completely

possessed by his love for the music. He loves various

women, but stays with none until he meets Sarah, a kindred

spirit who also loves country music. She turns his life around.

Paul also loves his father, some old people he met in the

hill country of the South, and the members of his last band,

but first and foremost he loves his music.

Does this person love him?
Many people love, or think they love Paul, but he is

very self-absorbed and he only realizes how much

others love him when he looses everything.

him?
Paul’s mother is a nag, she is never happy with her

son because she lost her two older boys to war. She would

keep him in the yard if she could. Paul’s father loves his

son and is proud of his abilities, but over the years he grows tired

over Paul’s irresponsible attitudes and tendency to run away

rather than face his problems.

Paul comes from a small town, which could be located

any where in the country. The small-town ideals seem

too confining to a boy with the nature of a dreamer. He runs

away, but always comes home.

What does he want out of life?
Paul wants to be recognized as the best singer

and songwriter in the world. Nothing else will satisfy

and his frustration drives the tale.

Paul can never access his deepest feelings except

through song. He keeps the world at arm’s length because

his mother abused him as a child.

I believe there are many stories about musicians and dreamers

to be told. Paul Bowen’s story in The Picker is complete.

I think Paul would see me a kindred spirit since I have been

a musician most of my life. I think he would want to be around

for a while and then he would move on.

I think there are a lot of musicians out there who are like

Paul Bowen, I’ve met more than a few. They are driven by

their dreams, and while this is not the easiest life – what

artist’s life is? I think we have to follow our dreams, even

if the path is hard and there are many lessons that must

be learned.

I'm doing a tele-seminar next week about blog tours and I would love input from you all.

There are many things to discuss about blog tours and I worked out some initial questions to get people thinking - they are:

Finding Funboy by Matt Golec

What's his name? Why did you pick that name?
The main character in the novel “Finding Funboy” is
named August (Gus) Frank III. Gus has a link with the
past through his shared name, yet he goes by ‘Gus’ to
show that he’s also choosing his own path.

Give us a brief description of how he looks. Is
there anything unusual about his appearance?
Gus is an almost-out-of-college journalist, and he
(somewhat reluctantly) compares himself more to Dustin
Hoffman rather than Robert Redford in the movie “All
the President’s Men.”

Who does he love? Why?
As a young, unattached fellow, Gus finds himself
moving closer to friends and away from family -- a
fairly normal part of growing up, but still an
important transition that can be confusing.

Does this person love him?
Gus has loyal, longtime friends who care deeply for
him, although some of those ties are stressed, tested
and transformed by the events that take place in the
book.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to
him?
Gus’ family provides a solid emotional base for him to
stand on. However, as Gus and his brother grow up and
out of the house, their family’s day-to-day influence
wanes as Gus feels his way toward coming into his own.

Where is he from? Does his hometown affect his
behavior, thoughts and attitude?
Gus is from Portland, Maine, a small coastal city
where he’s lived all his life. Although he likes where
he’s from, Gus is beginning to realize that if he
really wants to move into adulthood, he may have to
leave the familiar setting of Portland behind, at
least for a while.

What does he want out of life?
Gus wants to be a reporter, following in the
journalistic footsteps of his father. But because his
dad runs the town’s daily paper, Gus knows he should
probably work at another paper where he can practice
journalism -- and occasionally screw up -- without
worrying about his father looking over his shoulder.

What's his biggest secret? (Only share if it isn't
a spoiler in the story.)
Gus has always had a bit of a crush on his best
friend’s girlfriend, and while it’s not exactly a
closely held secret, these feelings end up coloring
the choices Gus makes in “Finding Funboy.”

Did you write more than one story about him?
No -- as much as I like this character, I think I’ve
told his big story.

How would he describe you?
The older I get, the more I think Gus would describe
me as his father.

Is there anything else about your hero that we need

What I really enjoyed about this character was his
growth. It’s the choices he makes and the actions he
takes -- some for the better, some for the worse --
that help form the core of his maturing self.

He's a ten year old boy wearing his pajamas while traveling to different worlds. A good, Irish looking boy, blonde hair and freckles.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

Well, he is riding on the back of a 3000 pound flying cougar who can speak and wield magical powers.

Who does he love? Why?

He loves his Uncle Jake, who he recently lost to a heart attack. Uncle Jake was his best friend, and when he dies, Conor's life is shattered.

Does this person love him?

Uncle Jake loved Conor deeply, as he did with all of his nieces and nephews.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

Very much so. His mother and father take excellent care of him. His family has three cats, and he has a big sister that loves to pick on him. Most of all, though, he loved his Uncle Jake more than anything.

Where is he from?

He lives in Northern California, at the foot of the Redwood Highway.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?

Maybe somewhat. He's pretty much a normal ten year old. He likes to play video games, ride bikes and play in the forest.

What does he want out of life?

In the beginning of the story, he wants his Uncle back more than anything else.

Why did you pick that name? I've always liked the name Alex. Donnelly seemed to fit him.

Give us a brief description of how he looks. He's average height, black hair and grey eyes. He tends to slouch a lot.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance? He has a white scar extending from the bottom tip of his left ear to his shoulder.

Who does he love? he slowly falls in love with a paralegal he meets when he returns to the city.
Why? He sees something in her he has been searching for all his life - peace.

Does this person love him? Yes, though she resists it at first

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him? Extremely, but he has never known them. He was raised in foster homes.

Where is he from? Born in Seattle, WA, but has lived most of his life in Vancouver Canada

What's his name?

There are two heroes…

Marcus Uffin Gettorix, a young Romano-British man initially employed by the Roman Army as a scout on the northern border of Britain.

The other is a career centurion, Emelius Karrus, in his mid forties, intensely loyal, capable, dependable. This is the second century; Britain has already been occupied by the Romans for almost a century.

Why did you pick that name?

Marcus is the son of a mixed union; his father is a Senator in Britain as part of his career path, his mother is related to the ruling aristocracy of northern Britain - his name is typical of a mixed marriage.

Emelius is a real historic character, serving in Britain, probably promoted to Tribuen in the field and later serving in Persia.

Give us a brief description of how he looks.

Marcus is tall, and wiry - from his British side and dark haired, olive skinned from his Mediterranean ancestry. Like most of his fellow soldiers, he is tough and very fit. He wears British clothes to pass as a trader but has Roman military uniform which he wears for formal occasions.

Emelius is thickset, has Mediterranean colouring and black eyes. Again, his profession has made him strong and hardy. He wears military gear - a crested steel helmet over crew-cut greying hair, overlapping strip armour sewn to a leather tunic, a leather kilt, grieves and sandal-like hob-nailed boots. For ceremonial occasions, he has a set of helmet and armour decorated with brass detail.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

Marcus has an unusual mixture of looks because of his ancestry; blue eyes with dark skin and hair are striking.

Emelius is immediately compelling; he is one of the Legion's principal centurions at the peak of his active career and in the prime of life, his self-confidence colours his whole bearing and character, he stands out in any group.

Who does he love? Why?

Marcus falls in love with Asel, the daughter of a trader when he helps her escape from a prison camp.

Emelius has taken a local woman to wife; when he is posted elsewhere, he will make a small provision for her and leave her.

Does this person love him?

Asel has loved Marcus from the times he has come to her father's house but her father makes jokes about her feelings and she tries to hide them.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

Marcus' father is a distant figure, he returned to Rome when Marcus was a boy but letters are exchanged regularly - Marcus is unusual in having been taught to read Latin; the relationship is a pragmatic one. His Mother is very important, he visits her at her home whenever duties permit, helps with household tasks.

Emelius' family is the Roman Army, no contest.

Where is he from?

Marcus is from the Roman Empire's North West frontier: the area of present day Dumfriesshire in Scotland.

Emelius' antecedents are never mentioned; he signed up for a minimum stretch of 25 years in the army in his teens and this is his life. Having only the two names: Emelius Karrus, we know he is not from Rome itself, perhaps from Sicily.

Does his hometown affect his behaviour, thoughts and attitude?

Marcus is constantly beset by conflict; his two backgrounds make him an outsider in both the Roman Army and in his northern British tribal world, too often he can see both sides of an argument and his covert work as a scout (think of the old Western scouts used by the US army) is a life of deception.

Emelius rarely thinks of his early life. The Army has replaced family, his life is one of certainty, physical well-being and self-reliance.

What does he want out of life?

Marcus wants to settle down with a wife, a family and a farm and let soldiering become distant memories to tell his children - but not yet, when he is old, forty perhaps.

Emelius has what he wants from life, promotion would be good but not all the paperwork he knows it will entail; domestic life is comfortable but not essential - he is a soldier's soldier.

What's his biggest secret? (Only share if it isn't a spoiler in the story.)

Marcus doesn't know what he is capable of… only the Druids know that secret and they aren't telling.

Did you write more than one story about him?

Not so far.

How would he describe you?

Marcus would think we're chair-bound elders.

Emelius would think we're soft-muscled scribes but might concede we have our uses.

Is there anything else about your hero that we need to know? Feel free to share.

As the story progresses, Marcus feels increasingly manipulated and insecure, a tool of the Gods that he scarcely believes in.

Officers like Emelius always have a healthy contempt for the political appointees who command them, he finds his disapproval well-founded. He also finds the hardest thing he had to do in Britain was pay his respects to the widow of his commanding officer.

"Ladies of Class"

What's his name? Chief Inspector Detective Richard Hayward

Why did you pick that name? As I am not the Author, that is hard to answer. Mum probably picked that name as she related a lot of her writings to some aspect of her life.

Give us a brief description of how he looks. Richard is tall, slim with dark hair. His face can change quite dramatically. He has a serious air that determines his position in the force. But the twinkle in his eye reveals his remarkable sense of humour that can take over, not always at the most appropriate time.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance? Not really. At the beginning of the story Richard is recovering from a broke bone in his leg. So he probably is not walking quite normally.

Who does he love? Why? Richard loves his wife Kate and of course his mother who is one of the characters throughout the story. Richard adores Kate, his first love. Kate is absent until the end of the story but she is always on Richard's mind. One can understand his devotion to Kate as events progress. Even feel his sense of loss that Kate is not with him to share his happiness for his promotion and move to their new home.

Does this person love him? Richard really believes that Kate loves him, however, at times there is a hint of doubt in his mind. As Kate entries the story towards the end, one really does get the felling for the depth of love towards Richard.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him? Ella, Richard's mother plays an important part in Richard's life at the moment. In Kate's absence, Ella has taken care of Richard after his accident. She is assisting Richard in setting up his new home after his promotion and move to Burshill. At first Richard didn't feel the need for his mother to be doing so much. However, when he is called back to duty before his convalescence is up, to investigate the murders, he then sees the value and importance of all that his mother is doing.

Where is he from? Richard is originally from London, England.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude? Richard's background as a big town policeman and his reputation for 'getting the gangster', preceded him to the small town of Burshill. But he really does not act like a 'big time cop'. In some ways, even though his is probably the youngest officer to get his promotion, he is quite unassuming and at times, humble.

What does he want out of life? Probably the thing Richard wants most is for Kate and himself to enjoy a quiet life in their new home town and do his job well He was never really happy with all the fame and attention he was receiving in London.

What's his biggest secret? (Only share if it isn't a spoiler in the story.) Richard does not really appear to have any secrets, unless his somewhat unusual methods of 'catching the villain’' could be considered a secret.

Did you write more than one story about him? Yes, Mum did write another Detective Richard Hayward murder mystery book.

How would he describe you? I think Richard would describe Mum as a very private woman who was never without a book or pen in her hand. Avidly reading or furiously writing.

Is there anything else about your hero that we need to know? Feel free to share. Richard was able to combine his thoroughness of investigation and questioning with diplomacy. Which added to his successes.

Why did you pick that name? Truthfully, and this is a secret, I was in love with a boy named Paul when I was in the fourth grade. Shhh. Don't tell anyone!

Give us a brief description of how he looks.He has brown hair and deep brown eyes. He looks very smart and he is very smart. He keeps getting shorter, as 'the girl' gets taller.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance? No

Who does he love? Why? Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to love my heroine. She wants desperately for him to love her, but he seems preoccupied with just being a kid. Darn it!

Does this person love him? Yes, 'the girl' is desperately and deeply in love with him.

Where is he from? The same town that 'the girl' is from-somewhere out there in middle America.

In the beginning he loves no one. He’s had a few dates and isn’t a virgin, but his experience with the opposite sex is limited. He would like to love someone but has no idea how to romance a woman. He needs help.

Does this person love him?

No. In the beginning she barely tolerates him. She’s with him for one specific purpose: to teach him to write romance in a meaningful and entertaining manner.

This is a non-applicable question for this story.

I’m his hero. Not only did I make it possible for him to write romance in an acceptable manner. I also made it possible for him to have some of the greatest sex a man could have.

The hero, like many men, doesn’t have a clue about women. He doesn’t comprehend that having sex isn’t the same as romance. Although the heroine is there to teach him how to write about romance, she’s also teaching him to be romantic. He has to apply this newly found skill and the latter part of the book.

What's his name? Joshua Valkron Plofhard

Why did you pick that name? I made up his middle name and last name, though the first name I chose had special meaning. A man named Joshua led the Israelites succeeding Moses, the man who delivered his people out of Egypt. Similar to Moses’ successor, Joshua of “Partially Human”, ultimately leads his people out of human ignorance and prejudice.

Who does he love? Why? Joshua doesn’t fall in love with Kimberly Derth until late in the book, though he does treat her special before he does realize his true feelings for her.

Does this person love him? The feelings Kimberly feels for Joshua are definitely mutual.

Where is he from? Los Angeles
Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude? His rejection from the citizens and their cruel treatment starting in the second part of the book destroys his esteem and spirit, still he has his friends to support him.

What's his name?Christopher Vadia

Why did you pick that name?
Chris' name was selected as Christopher Columbus was the discoverer of the New World. There are many references hidden, and some not so hidden, such as the letter he writes to the love of his life on Columbus Day about exploring the "new world," and many other references. That sense of discovery is really re-discovery as there is nothing new in the universe, just our awareness of it. Many of us have forgotten and/or forsaken the core essence of who we were in our youth and our values and dreams and it is that re-discovery that the book focuses on and that commonality of re-evaluation that occurs when one reaches the point of middle age and the passing of the torch. The lesson of the book is hope through tragedy, happiness through love of the self. Life has two sides, the ying and yang, the duality of nature. The loss of one so close changes and completely alters the outlook of life and that sadness can only be cured with the understanding and love of the self. Once he accepts his mortality and experiences the things he does (I can't give away the plot) he becomes aware of the miracles that surround us everyday and lives each day knowing it is truly a gift. His long dead wife comes to his aid and puts him back on the path to redemption of the last 15 years of his life.

He is entranced by her playing, infatuated by her looks, and is completely and unconditionally in love with her faults as well as her attributes. He is drawn to her as he is a flawed person and Angela completes his desire to bring him successfully into the musical world that he could have never accomplished by himself.

Does this person love him? She loves him dearly, but because she is so insecure and neurotic due to a secret childhood horror story, she cannot love herself enough to give of herself until long after her death.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him? His family plays a small part of the romantic story.

Where is he from? Bridgeville, a fictional place based in Southern New Jersey

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude? Not really

What does he want out of life? He is searching for true meaning and as he goes along in his life with Angela he discovers that it is the journey that counts. They succeed as a team believing in each other through the worst of times until the pressure that Angela imposes on herself becomes too much. He then gives up on himself and his life becomes a muddled smearing of day to day existence and not much else or hope of anything further bringing him happiness. He then begins his trek through the past and re-discovers who he once was. Life has two sides, the ying and yang, the duality of nature. The loss of one so close changes and completely alters the outlook of life and that sadness can only be cured with the understanding and love of the self. First and foremost this a love story that shows unlimited devotion even after one mate dies. When we open up the first chapter, we already know Chris' wife is long gone and he has suffered greatly. The depression he allows himself to stay in for so long, changes as he begins to recount the past-though involuntary. The setting of the future, it's technology and the human nature that rarely changes though the ages is exposed during the exposition. The real fun begins when we go back to his youth.

One of the messages of this book was to show that regardless of the age, future, past, or present-the needs and wants of the human heart can never be replaced by technology. The other aspect was to show that regardless that these two people were together twenty-four hours a day and experiencing everything together, they grew apart because of the flaws that each had and those flaws prove to be what made them great as well. Great art comes from imperfection and like the ying and yang, there is always danger in beauty be it the cliffs of Big Sur and rocks below, the infatuation of human beauty, or the spiritual dogma entrenched by centuries of emotional manipulation.

That is quite a lot to write into a romance novel, but it is what life is all about if one wants to take the time to understand it's meaning and one's place in it.
Chris is every woman's dream. A man so incredibly devoted that no other woman could ever take the place of his wife and soul mate Angela. His height and breadth of shoulder alone made him intimidating without taking in his dark, dangerously handsome countenance and mocking green eyes. Here was no fop or dandy. His dress, although cut by a master’s hand, was casual with no sign of the fripperies affected by the Macaronis. However, when occasion dictated, he was known to dress to perfection as many would attest. He had an assurance of manner brought about by matter of birth but even at an early age was widely known as a wild youth. He was well respected amongst his contemporaries who hailed him as a top rate fellow but his escapades were eyed askance by the older members of the haut ton who lamented his rakish ways.

What's his name?
Paul (Pavya) Farrell and Alan (Ayanke) Kedward

Why did you pick that name?
Pavya and Ayanke are names that are meant to sound ancient. I did some research on ancient Indo-European linguistic theory to get them right. The other names are modern versions that the two brothers adopted. Alan's first and last names are taken from different academics in history and prehistory, as a bit of a joke.

Give us a brief description of how he looks.
They are twins--fraternal not identical. So, there's a strong family resemblance, but if you knew them, you wouldn't mistake them for each other. Both are tall (close to six feet), dark-haired and rangy. Celtic-looking but with something else. Pavya has short, curly hair; Ayanke's is straight. They look to be in their mid to late forties. Ayanke is a little grayer and thinner than Pavya, but also more hyperactive.

Ayanke has a lateral scar under his left eye and wears glasses. Both start off the book clean-shaven, but Pavya later favors a beard. Pavya wears a turtleneck sweater, jeans and a dark-blue coat. Ayanke wears a shabby green Army-Navy jacket that's more than it seems, sweatshirt and jeans.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?
Not at all. Like Jason Bourne, they are notable only in their ordinariness, and for similar reasons.
Who does he love? Why?
Pavya loves his dead wife Sarah. Ayanke also loves Sarah. As you can see, this is problematical, especially since Ayanke met her first and continues to communicate with her now she's dead. Both loved Sarah's exotic beauty (she was Cameroonian), her artistic talent and her love of life.

Does this person love him?
Yes, she loved them both.

Tell us about his family.
They have each other, of course, and Pavya was married to Sarah. Ayanke also has a grandson and Pavya...well, that would be telling. They also have friends whom they have adopted for family.

Are they important to him?
Absolutely. A central theme of the story is how far each one would go to protect family. It's pretty far.

Where is he from?
That is a bit of a mystery. Ayanke appears to be Russian and Pavya is apparently French. Ayanke has spent a lot of time in St. Petersburg while Pavya has favored Paris.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?
They grew up in the wilderness. They have a lot of trouble adjusting to the fast, loud and overly controlled pace of modern life.

What does he want out of life?
They want to be left in peace. As far as their vocations in life, Pavya is a talented painter and Ayanke is an equally talented shaman.

That they are not quite what they seem to be.

Did you write more than one story about him?
Yes, we did. We've written three books so far, and parts of a few others.

How would he describe you?
Judith and I used to joke that if we were in the situation of these two brothers, that she would be Pavya and I would be Ayanke.

Bryn Tabral is the hero’s name in Scion of the Dark Moon.

Why did you pick that name?

“Bryn” sounded fairly harmless and kind, and the main character starts out as a naïve young nobleman. “Tabral” sounded somewhat aristocratic, strong, yet not menacing.

Give us a brief description of how he looks.

Bryn has long straight raven hair that falls to his shoulders and intelligent steel gray eyes that have a way of seeing past facades. His skin is white with a tinge of bronze that comes from spending a fair amount of time outdoors. His face is typical of his race, with aquiline features and thin lips, and his stature is tall and slender. He carries himself with the confident and energetic stride of a man who is comfortable with his ability to take care of himself. He is considered handsome by most.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

Bryn’s eyes are magnetic, and his emotions play out in their depths for those canny enough to notice. Other than that, he is of typical Arani noble stock.

Who does he love? Why?

Bryn loves two women, or at least thinks he does. One is Alyssa, a noble Arani sorceress apprentice with the Crown Robes. He loves her because she is intelligent, kind-hearted, and intensely loyal. The other is Yeva, an Ulari commoner and thief by circumstance. Bryn is attracted to her unbridled independence and fierce emotions, as well as her physical charms, which she uses to her advantage without regard for station or protocol. This is alluring to Bryn.

Does this person love him?

Both Alyssa and Yeva become enamored of Bryn, and this causes complications for them all.Tell us about his family.

Are they important to him?

Bryn is adopted. His adopted family is very important to him, and he is intensely loyal and loving to his adopted parents, and adores his little sister Vela. His older brother by adoption, Feran, on the other hand, despises Bryn and Bryn returns the feeling. Bryn does not know his birth parents. Though not a relative, his closest friend is his tutor, Nibiru, a hulking black man from the far South. Nibiru is also Bryn’s bodyguard and is in the employ of Bryn’s adopted father, Lord Earlen Tabral of Falcon Vale, though Nibiru’s past is a mystery.

Where is he from?

Bryn’s birthplace is unknown. He was raised as an orphan by Lord Earlen Tabral of Falcon Vale, a rural barony in the kingdom of Aralan . Falcon Vale is a collection of rural villages and a handful of border keeps situated in the Drakespire Mountains , on the fringes of the nation.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?

Very much so. Falcon Vale is a rural barony and Bryn is the second son of the baron. He therefore does not have the responsibility of his older brother who will one day inherit the barony, nor does he have to deal with the daily intrigue of court life in the more settled parts of the kingdom. Therefore, Bryn is allowed much freedom. He hunts, practices archery, and helps out in judging disputes within the barony. Thanks to his tutor, Nibiru, he is also an accomplished swordsman, literate, and generally better educated than most folks in his barony, including the gentry.

What does he want out of life?

Though this changes significantly as the plot progresses, in the beginning Bryn simply wants to be happy with his life and his lot in it. He is content but restless. He knows there is something important he should be doing, but knows not what it is. Though he is aware Feran, his older brother, will inherit the barony one day, he fears what effect his callous brother will have on the people of Falcon Vale.

His biggest secret is his uncanny sixth sense, which allows him to “see” things that others cannot, sometimes manifesting in dreams. This also gives him a strong connection with his canid Stalker, bordering on telepathy. (Canids are large intelligent wolf-like quadrupeds.)

Yes, Scion of the Dark Moon is only the first book in a trilogy.

How would he describe you?

He would see me as I am, as opposed to what I appear to be.

He is a Roman/Celt and there was a real Celtic hero named Ambiorix who caused Julius Caesar problems. Give us a brief description of how he looks. Long dark blond hair and blue eyes that turn green when he is angry. He is six feet tall and has a sexy dimple on his chin. He is a soldier so he is in good shape--very masculine. Hot!

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

I think it is his eyes because of the way they change color.

Who does he love? Why?

Nemu. She enchanted him from the first time they met. She is the only one who can raise his ire and his passion.

Does this person love him?

Yes.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

His father was a Roman general and governor of Britannia--a very powerful man and his mother is a Celtic princess. However, his birth father, who he did not know about until recently, was a Celtic king who died fighting the Roman legions. When he discovers the truth about his birth father, that changes everything for him. He is pretty close to his mother, but he does not see her often. They are very much alike.

Where is he from?

He was born in Britannia.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?

He was born in Camulodunum in 60 AD, the night of Boudica's rebellion and he grew up in Rome. All of his life, he considered himself Roman and fought against the Celts--that is until he met Nemu and learned the truth about his birth father. What does he want out of life? He is very conficted. Before he comes back to Britannia and meets Nemu, he is an ambitious soldier commanding a cavalry unit. He wants to command a legion some day. His destiny sort of knocks him down and he sympathizes with the Celts, starts having strange dreams, etc. His world is turned upside down. By the end of the story, his life changes so much. It's beyond his control.

Women continue to mystify him.

Did you write more than one story about him?

Yes. The next book, Ravenwolf, is more about him. The title is the name he is called by the Celts.

What's his name? Christian Delaford, the eight Duke of Haverton

Why did you pick that name?
Hm. Not really sure about that one. Guess I just liked the sound of it. He is a Duke so had to be the Duke of something. Give us a brief description of how he looks.

The heroine, Elizabeth, calls him “a beautiful but savage beast” and I suppose he is. Christian is a big man and very dark, perhaps from his travels in the Orient. He wears his hair longer than is fashionable in Regency England (ties it back at the nape of his neck) and isn’t the sort to wear evening gloves. He’d probably laugh in the face of anyone who dared suggest it! Oh, and that long hair? Black as sin. His eyelashes are perhaps the only pretty thing about the man. They are black, thick, and frame eyes the exact color of a rainy day. Yummy. Is there anything unusual about his appearance? Well, yes, his hair. He wears it longer than what was fashionable during that time period and tends to club it back.

Who does he love? Why? He loves several people, actually, besides Elizabeth, the heroine. His first love was his mother, who is deceased, but her memory is alive in his heart. He also loves, in a pure sense, An Li. Christian first saw her as a slave girl when he was on business in China. She is a tortured soul whom Christian rescues. He buys her freedom and brings her to England with him. It is Elizabeth whom he most loves. Yes, she is beautiful but there are plenty of beautiful women in England. No, he loves her fiery spirit and the loyalty she feels for those she loves.

Does this person love him?
Every woman in Christian’s life loves him. He is immensely loveable once you get past the powerful, masculine good looks. Elizabeth fears the things he makes her feel but she soon learns that beneath the surface of that very broad chest beats a chivalrous heart. She is mad for him! Tell us about his family. Are they important to him? His mother was vastly important to Christian and helped shape his views about women and his relationships to them. His father was a despicable adulterer who broke his mother’s heart. Every protective instinct he now possesses is due to the ill treatment of his beloved mother.

Where is he from? He is an Englishman and a member of the aristocracy. Though he is well-traveled, he has residences in London and several large estates scattered throughout England.

He wants to be free of intrigue and the manipulative ways of others. Christian is a man who would be perfectly content to grow old with his love by his side. Why did you pick that name?
Its an ironic choice actually. He is a priest of a religion that must be sung, and at one point in his life, he is attacked by bandits who cut his throat, leaving him unable to speak in anything but a hoarse whisper. It automatically speaks to a certain poignancy.

Give us a brief description of how he looks.
Lunit sees him this way: He stood a muscular two meters tall with his black hair close cropped, save for the war lock that hung down his back. His mustache and goatee were trimmed neatly and completed a frame to a sun browned handsome face that was neither hard nor soft but capable of both degrees. His eyes, intense grey reflectors of his deepest thoughts, were focused into the sullen eyes of his opponent.
Then suddenly, without warning, Lunit's lover smiled. It was an inner motivated smile that revealed near perfect teeth, a myriad of laugh lines that softened his eyes from slate to twilight, and the soul of a small boy who, when he enjoyed a moment, did so completely and without reserve. As a young man he had long black hair to his waist, but by his mid forties elects for the above look.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?
When he was ordained in his religion, the Kova, he received three separate diamond shaped brands in the center of his chest at the conclusion of each of the three phases of his training. Later, after the attack on him, he wears a jagged scar across his throat that is often described as looking like a ghastly necklace.

Who does he love?
He has two great loves in his life (besides his religion)—Myrran Yar San, whom he marries and who is killed in his arms when he receives his scar, and in his middle age, the singer Lunit.

Why?
Why does anyone love? Myrran is his young passionate companion, smart and funny. aLunit is a tough yet sensitive woman of the world.

Does this person love him?
Both love him passionately, Myrran enough to give her life for him and Lunit enough to give up her singing voice so he can sing his religion again. (how that happens is in the book ‘Tales of a Warrior Priest story: The Gift of Song)

He is the first son of a Highland noble family with a younger brother and sister, both of whom he doesn’t get along with. His father dies when he is young and he is more influenced by an uncle who is a priest. He gives up his noble life, including his title as The Shoutte of Shoutte when he enters the priesthood.

Not really since he leaves home so early.

Where is he from?
The Highlands of the country of Umbria on the world of Altiva.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?
Yes and no. He is, of course, of the country, but he spends his years from fifteen to twenty five at the Academy Kova and that influences him more.

What does he want out of life?
To make a difference in a positive way in the world. A real hero in a very classic sense, he is truly motivated by a desire to do good. He’d better be, because he really believes in his religion and is trained as a healer.

What's his biggest secret?
A real fear that he isn’t doing enough—I think all devout people have that inner fear.

Did you write more than one story about him?
I’ve written some thirty stories about him, short stories,, novellas and novel length ( Death at Dragonthroat, Tales of a Warrior Priest, the Daemonhold Curse) that deal with him from age fifteen to in his eighties. Three of the books are out, one is on the way, and a lot more in my head waiting in line to come out…

How would he describe you?
He probably would find me not committed enough to life or disciplined enough. I know he’d make me do more sit ups than I’m willing to do on my own time…

I wanted something you didn’t hear everyday. Something really unique.

Taken from the book: “With sandy-blonde hair that could never retain a coherent shape and a face young and untouched by the rigors of the world, Dras possessed that little brother quality that women always found attractive on a simply platonic level.” Is there anything unusual about his appearance? Unusual how? He doesn’t have, like, an unsightly mole or anything.

Who does he love? Why?

Well, that’s a loaded question. In the beginning, he loves only himself. But, as the story progresses, he realizes how much he loves his best-friend-since-the-embryonic-stage, Rosalyn Myers. She’s the one that the Strange Man is after. She’s the reason Dras chooses to fight.

Does this person love him?

Yes. How much she loves him, even she doesn’t realize.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

His older brother Jeff is a major player in the series. Jeff pretty much got everything right that Dras got wrong. He’s responsible, happily married, well-liked, and just a good, decent guy. Needless to say, Dras is resentful of that, feeling that his brother is living his nice, shiny life in front of him as a way to rub it in. Dras’ parents are good, hard-working folk who are forever patient with Dras and his refusal to grow up, but, again, once he starts down this road that will lead to a showdown with the Strange Man, he begins to see his family in a new light and realizes how much they mean to him. Where is he from? He was born and raised in his little town of Greensboro, but many would argue he came from Mars.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?

Absolutely. Greensboro is the town that never changes. While this has prompted many people Dras’ age to pull up stakes and find their fortunes elsewhere, Dras really sees his town as his sanctuary. It’s familiar to him. Safe. He surmises that, as long as he stays there, change will never find him. Boy, is he wrong…

What does he want out of life?

Play video games. Read comics. Hang with Rosalyn. Avoid responsibility wherever it might rear its ugly head. What's his biggest secret? (Only share if it isn't a spoiler in the story.) He doesn’t really have a big secret. He’s pretty much lived his misspent life in front of God and everybody without shame. Well, there was that time in third grade when he flooded the girls’ bathroom, but…

Did you write more than one story about him?

I wrote a whole trilogy dealing with the one fateful choice he made to “put away childish things” and take on the forces of darkness. It’s called The Coming Evil and you should really be reading it now.

How would he describe you?

Probably as really, really mean. I’m the one who upset his peaceful existence by introducing him to the Strange Man.

Coursey is tall, lean, dark, and could pass for handsome in poor light. His skin is tan and weathered from seven years at sea aboard a whaler, and there are lines around his eyes, from squinting in the sun.His laughter is a joyful sound and rings out often in good times, but never with cruelty.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

Not really.

Who does he love? Why?

He loves his grandmother, who raised ihm. Loves her enough to come home and care for her when he learns she is ill, even though the secrets in the past that drove him away have not changed. He is mighty attracted to Hope Voeschell, who was raised in a kind of pacifist cult that took all the fun out of fundamentalism. They shunned her for wanting to be a teacher.

Does this person love him?

Gran loves Coursey and doesn't want to be a "burden" to him. Hope, jobless, homeless, and living on the charity of her best friend, is too worried about how to earn a living to admit how she feels about Coursey.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

What's his name?

Richard, Lord Brinston, son and heir of the Duke of Haverhorn. His nickname (used only by those close to him, at his invitation) is Brin. He is a Round Table Magician.

Why did you pick that name?

Brinston - when I first wrote his name, it sounded good. Solid English salt and pepper of the earth. Unlike other characters in my writing, once he was named, he never let me change it. It fits.

Give us a brief description of how he looks.

Brinston is the archetype of the romance hero: tall, dark and handsome, at least in Lady Martha's eyes. When she first met him, he looked like an angel, but once she realized what a pain he can be, he looked devilish. His eyes are pewter gray, turning to mist when he is sweet. Brinston can give the impression of being one very dangerous man, but he tends to keep that side of him tamped down.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

I can't say there is anything in his looks that would strike a passerby as distinctive other than his assurance. His unusual qualities are on the inside. Very few people meet the real Brinston.

Who does he love? Why?

Brinston loves his mother, father, sister and brother because they are supportive of him and fill his life with the love all people need. He does not love Lady Martha. No way is he going to love Martha.

Does this person love him?

His family? Of course they love Brin, austere warts and all. They can see beyond the forbidding mask he ties on for safety to the man inside who is capable of great tenderness. Martha? Poor girl, she can't help but love Brinston, even when he makes her as mad as a dowager not given deference.

Where is he from?

Brinston doesn't come from a town, like those upstart Americans with their notions of equality. He hails from a proud line of men, one of whom gave allegiance to William the Conqueror. He is a blooded aristocrat of Regency era England . He was born at Brinston Castle , one of the great estates of Britain .

Since home is family, not a place, it permeates every inch of Brinston. The sterling difference between him and his father is Brinston has decided that he cannot share his life with a lover. His father was lucky; there isn't another lady in the world like the duchess. He will marry -- eventually -- but his wife will be a shallow society lady, one who does not need or want to share his inner life. He will NOT marry Lady Martha.

What does he want out of life?

Do you mean before or after Lady Martha batters him into shape?

What's his biggest secret?

He has a few secrets. First, when Brinston is undercover chasing spies and other bad guys for the government, even his name is unknown. But Brinston's biggest secret is he is a magician. Handling magic is dangerous; look how many witches, wizards and magicians have been burned at the stake throughout history and you will understand why it can't be known. He means never to reveal himself. To anyone. No way can Brinston kneel before a woman and proclaim, "I am a magician." It would give her too much power over him.

Did you write more than one story about him?

Brinston's story is Round Table Magician -- you can get the paperback at amazon.com and the e-book at www.awe-struck.net. He does make appearances in Thwarting Magic, which is looking for publication now. I anticipate he will show up in other books as yet unwritten. I like Brin too much to lose track of him. Even if he is unwilling to peek in, Lady Martha will make him be sociable.

How would he describe you?

First, he would be snooty and proper, saying, "Yes, I met Ann Tracy Marr at Camelot." Privately, I can see him telling his friends, "Ann Tracy Marr, she is one of the dowagers to avoid at Almack's. She's got two marriageable daughters." What he won't tell a soul is that I am almost as irritating as Lady Martha. I nudge him to open up -- I urge him to admit he doesn't need or want to spend his life as an island -- I kick him in the butt and tell him he isn't going to get away with staying aloof from life. Come to think of it, Brinston probably thinks I am as irritating as Lady Martha, even if I don't throw my daughters at his head.

Pictures are paintings; the photograph was unknown even magically in 1814 England . All of Brinston's paintings are hanging at the Castle. If I tried to take one to give you, the duke would probably throw me in a dungeon. Lady Martha has a miniature, but sorry to say, she won't share it. It is in a locket that she wears all the time.

Avery comes from actor Avery Brooks (Deep Space 9) and Hudson comes from the Bruce Willis movie Hudson Hawk Give us a brief description of how he looks. Hudson is a bounty hunter pursuing a man who sold his soul to the devil for 13 years of youth, fame and fortune.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

Nothing unusual. He's 6 feet, muscular build, bronze skin and wears a short cropped hairdo like a soldier.

Who does he love? Why?

He's falling in love with small town sheriff Mary Jamison. There was an instant chemistry between them.

No, her heart belongs to the memory of her late husband. She has no room for another.

His mother died when he was young. His father, a soldier, was hard on him. They have a strained relationship. Avery never speaks of him.

Where is he from?

Avery is a military brat. He doesn't know his actual birthplace.

The military was an important part of him. He even drives a Hummer to transport his prisoners. What does he want out of life? To make enough money to retire before 40 and to move to some tropical island surrounded by beautiful island girls.

What's his name?

Manelin

Why did you pick that name?

I tend to choose names based on what they mean. Manelin means Prince of Princes. It sounded like an unlikely hero name, and Manelin is a reluctant hero when first thrust into the thick of running from all he has ever known to learn that he is to fulfill his destiny as Arich—Savior of his people. Pieces of ancient prophecies come into play, but it's up to him to make choices. Right or wrong, they carry him deeper into situations that teach him to trust, act and even to love.

Give us a brief description of how he looks.

For Manelin it depends on when in the story we see him. Ethnically, his people are dark-haired and brown-eyed. However, his parents leave him with a man they trust among the Jonnick, a fair race, where he is forced to wash his hair with a purple concoction that lightens his hair and disguises his origins while living among the enemy.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

He is the only person within his village with brown eyes. As a child other children tease him calling him dung eyes. He's a loner, but not by choice.

Who does he love? Why?

He loves, Philander, the man he thinks is his grandfather.Does this person love him?Philander loves Manelin as his own. While raising the two-year-old to adulthood, Philader struggles to find the right time to tell the boy of his origins and his place in history.

Manelin's biological family gave him over to be raised by Philander because they believed the prophecies. It is predicted that his people will be trapped within the cage of ice and the only one to save them is the Arich. Because they believe their son fulfills this position they leave their two-year-old son behind with great distress knowing he will live among a people that hate them but with faith that he will rise to help them in the future.

Where is he from?

Manelin is born on a moonless night within the Stygian kiva. His people don't believe that the Land belongs to the people, but people belong to the Land. So he doesn't have a country—he is of the Land. This concept is one of the divisions between two cultures occupying the Land.

Manelin's people's belief that the people do not own the Land is in direct contrast to the Jonnick belief as their villages not only take over the land, but their laws put restrictions on the Stygians to the point of extinction.

What does he want out of life?

Manelin grows up without friends other than his grandfather and uncle and enjoys spending time with his goats as a goatherd. Because of the way people of the Village of Chock treat him due to his brown eyes; he prefers to spend time away from people and with his goats. As a young adult his one desire is to have a real friend.

His biggest secret, which he doesn't know until he reaches manhood is that he is not Jonnick, but is of Stygian blood.

No, this is the only one, although I've had requests for a sequel.

That's an interesting question. It made me think of him looking at me through the monitor. He'd say that I'm a motherly character that wants the best for him and a world where people learn to accept each other for who they are and to see that every person has worth.It was wonderful to meet him. Not a physical picture. But he's a handsome young man. Dark hair and olive skin. Straight white teeth and a lean muscular build. He's gorgeous, but his low self-esteem doesn't allow him to think so.

What's his name?

Rowan Cameron, or in the Blackfoot Nation he is the warrior Walks Alone

Why did you pick that name?
His father was a Scot who was transported after the battle of Culloden. His mother was a blue-eyed Cherokee, who named all her children after trees --Rowan, Larch and Loblolly. She named him, I didn't.Give us a brief description of how he looks.His picture is on the cover. He is young, only 23, but has been a man from the day of his naming ceremony when he was 15.

Is there anything unusual about his appearance?

Six feet, well muscled, long loose black hair, bright blue eyes, excellent teeth. Of course there are scars on his side from his Sun Dance, and the Ghost Dance shirt and the war paint are a bit un-fashionable in the moveable town of End-ofTrack.

Who does he love? Why?

He loves Christina Lawrence, a debutante who left a broken engagement behind her and traveled west for her health. Rowan has no idea why he loves her. She is everything he dislikes in a woman, argumentative, disrespectful of a warrior, a shameless and inventive liar, and--worst of all--skinny. He thinks very little of her people, because it is obvioius they have neglected the woman and they must be very poor hunters to provide her so little food.

Does this person love him?

Christy does love Rowan, but she doesn't WANT to love him. She wants to help him find his way in the white man's world--a world he has all but forgotten -- to help him with the twins and to teach him now to behave in a civilized way, now that she has saved him from the savages.

Tell us about his family. Are they important to him?

Rowan was lost from the wagon train when his parents headed west. His parents settled in Oregon, but died in a smallpox epidemic only the year before, leaving his 12-year-old twin siblings, Larch and Lolly alone. Where is he from? He was born in Virginia, lost from the Wagon Train in the high plains and lives with the Blackfoot people on the reservation.

Does his hometown affect his behavior, thoughts and attitude?

Rowan has almost no memory of anything that happened before the Blackfoot found him.

What does he want out of life?
Christy. To be respected as the shaman and healer that he is. And more than anything to recover one small blue-eyed --well to say more would indeed be a spoiler.

The sadness that fills him.

No, but I have another in mind. He and Christy may travel to Paris in 1906. Rasputin was there, then, with the Russian royal family. What do you think? Would the Russian magician Rasputin be a worthy opponent for Rowan?

Rowan doesn't know that I exist. He lives his life and cares for his family. I follow him around and write down what he says and does, but he has no idea I am here.
